Rats of doubt

Rats of doubt
gnawing away at mental moorings;
no thoughts of you sufficient
to drive them away.
I hear them rustle
at the edges of my mind,
hungry for seclusion,
swollen with uncertainty.
Once beaten back
by blinding hope
and the glint in your eye
when you smiled at me,
Now advancing
spurred by my torment,
words of your confusion
fueling their fervor.
Growing,
fed by your absence,
in cold clover
of restless apprehension.
Forceful,
coats glossy with anger,
eyes flashing, teeth bared
eating away at my defenses.
